Giants D-Line looks to Rebound

The New York football Giants go into training camp in Albany as underdogs, and for now, the second team in New York.  The Giants are a different animal then the Jets and you’ll never see Tom Coughlin talking about the Superbowl the way Rex Ryan does.

For the Giants, they come into a camp with the bad taste of last season in their mouths and an improved defense with the acquisitions of Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant.  But of course, it all starts with the defensive line and the motto of the Giants organization: you can never have enough pass rushers.  So we’ll start there.

D-Line

The Giants added depth to their defensive line once again by drafting Jason Pierre- Paul-an athletic freak- who may have more potential then any player drafted this year, but he is raw.  He only started seven games in college but his high ceiling is the reason why the Giants selected him with the No. 15 in the first round.  The Giants will treat him carefully and pick certain spots to put him in games when he can succeed, and with the Giants depth, he won’t have the  pressure on him to have a big season.

The Giants weren’t done drafting lineman.  In the second round they took DT Linval Joseph to improve their interior line that struggled last season.  Chris Canty was injured most of last season in his first year with the Giants and Rocky Bernard was a terrible disappointment.  Bernard may not be able to give the Giants what they need, but if Canty is healthy he can be a big part of the Giants line.  Also, Barry Cofield is one year removed from knee surgery and looks to rebound.  The Giants also have Jay Alford, Dave Tolleson, and of course Mathias Kiwanuka who is hoping to start opposite Justin Tuck.

But standing in Kisanuka’s way is Osi Umenyiora who threatened to retire and was benched by the Giants late last season.  Umenyiora can be a game changer for the Giants but he needs to improve in the run game.  Teams were constantly attacking him, and Osi failed last season stopping the run.  If he can get back to form the giants will be scary again.

And of course the Giants still have Justin Tuck who will come back from a bevy of ailments that slowed him down last season.  A healthy Justin Tuck will be a huge for the Giants, especially since Flozel Adams won’t be around to trip him around anymore.  Tuck needs to step up as a leader with Antonio Pierce gone and carry the torch that Michael Strahan left him.

Overall the Giants are stacked.  But they were stacked last year too.  With all the injuries the Giants D-Line should be much improved this year.  They are extremely deep like they were when they won the Superbowl and the coaching staff should be able to keep them all fresh by substituting guys throughout games.  Look for the D-Line to get the bad taste out of their mouth from last year and pounce on quarterbacks once again, and put fear in the eyes of opposing offenses.
